Parents and Guardians of Chalo School,
Hello! My name is Ken MacGillivray and I am the new Principal at Chalo School. I wish I was introducing myself under normal circumstances, however, we are still in the midst of a global pandemic. I know we will have future opportunities to meet one another in person, and I look forward to this.
I have been a teacher and school administrator for nearly 25 years. I started teaching Math and Science at an Alternate school in Surrey, B.C., many years ago. I started my first administration position in Kamloops in 2003, at a First Nations Alternate school called “The Four Directions program”. I have experience as an administrator in elementary schools, secondary schools, alternate schools, and even distance learning schools. Now I will be able to say I have experience as an administrator in a First Nations school.
Chalo School is a beautiful structure and school. I have worked in numerous schools, and the citizens of Fort Nelson First Nation should be especially proud of this architecturally enhanced and spacious building. I am honoured to live and work in the territory of the Fort Nelson First Nation, and with the children of this First Nation.
I am strong believer in excellent attendance, literacy and numeracy. I also believe that First Nations students sometimes need to walk in two worlds: the world of their ancestors with a strong sense of identity and culture, and the modern world, to achieve great success. I see that Chalo School offers this potential academic path with their strong cultural and language programs, as well as their dedicated staff and teaching program.
The past 18 months, have been an incredibly difficult time for students, and their families. COVID – 19 has changed our lives in so many ways, including how we operate our schools. Being in and out of school has had a significant impact on student learning. We are trying to in still a sense of normalcy to schooling this year. We have returned to in-person learning, with some restrictions, and we want this schedule to continue.
We ask that students and parents/guardians, check the school website frequently, and watch for important newsletter updates. We are performing temperature checks and health checks on all students and staff every morning, with the goal of keeping Chalo School Safe and Healthy this coming 2021 and 2022 school year. If your child has any cold like symptoms, you must keep your child at home.
We are excited about extending the students and school into the community and out onto the land this year. We wish everyone a safe and healthy fall, winter, and spring!
